Civic150 is a two-year project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It began in May 2026 and will celebrate Barnsley Civic’s 150th birthday on 25 January 2028. 

The project will explore the history of Barnsley Civic and restore some of the building’s original features. There will be workshops, exhibitions, talks, tours, performances and community events where people can learn about the building and share their own memories. 

Everyone has a chance to get involved and help tell the story of Barnsley Civic and we are taking on volunteers for the project!

If you would like an informal in-person chat about what volunteering would involve, you can call into one of our monthly Coffee Mornings, held the last Friday of each month (please see ‘What’s On’ for more information).

As an Archive Research Volunteer, you will:

• Have the option to attend a monthly volunteer meeting for training, updates and meeting other volunteers (first Monday of every month from September, at Barnsley Archives)
• Help research the history of Barnsley Civic.
  Organise and scan photographs, programmes, and other archive materials.
• Help create blog posts, create content, and find interesting ways to share stories.
• Help research the building’s original decoration and design

As an Events and Engagement Volunteer, you will:

• Have the option to attend a monthly volunteer meeting for training, updates and meeting other volunteers.
• Help collect photographs, memories and other archive items at our monthly Coffee Mornings (the last Friday of every Month, at Barnsley Civic).
• Welcome visitors and share the history of Barnsley Civic (full support will be provided).
• Help set up and run workshops, talks, tours and other events.
• Help create content for exhibitions and social media.
