At Barnsley Civic, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and helping create a more sustainable future. Over the past year, we’ve taken positive steps across our building, programming, community partnerships, and organisational culture to make sustainability part of everything we do.
Below are some examples of the changes we’ve made but this is just the beginning and we’ll continue building on this work throughout 2026–27 as we strive to reduce our impact, raise awareness, and embed environmental responsibility across everything we do.
Environmental Policy Statement 2026-7
At Barnsley Civic, we recognise that the climate and ecological crises are among the most significant challenges facing our communities now and in the future. As a non-profit cultural arts centre, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and using our platform to promote a more sustainable and responsible future.
Environmental responsibility is central to our values and decision-making. We are continually learning, improving, and working with others to ensure our organisation plays a positive role in addressing climate change.
In 2026 we have successfully moved from Preliminary to Basic accreditation by the Theatre Green Book in Building and Operations and are working towards achieving this for Productions as we start creating shows in-house. Our annual reporting via Julie’s Bicycles showed that we significantly reduced our carbon footprint from 150.12 tonnes CO2e in 2024-5, to 94.3 tonnes CO2e in 2025-26.
We recognise that we are not yet doing everything perfectly. We are committed to continuous improvement and welcome feedback on our environmental performance and plans.
