A brand new not-for-profit community radio station, Barnsley’s Radio Essentials, is set to launch from Barnsley Civic this summer, bringing a fresh local voice to the town. The station will soft launch online ahead of a full official launch in September, with ambitious plans to expand to DAB Digital Radio across Barnsley in the near future.
Operated by Barnsley Community Media CIC – a partnership between Barnsley Civic and Essentials Media – the station aims to become a powerful platform for local voices, stories, and music, while also helping to build stronger community connections across Barnsley and South Yorkshire.
Radio With a Purpose
Barnsley’s Radio Essentials is more than just music. The station has a clear social mission:

To offer free airtime to local charities and organisations so they can promote their events, projects, and ambitions

To provide free training opportunities for young people and individuals at risk of social isolation, helping them gain new skills and increase their employability through volunteering

To be a visible presence at local events, broadcasting live from the heart of the community
The station’s broadcast studios will be based inside Barnsley Civic, right at the centre of the town’s cultural and creative life.
Experienced Team, Local Focus
The team behind Barnsley’s Essentials brings together seasoned radio professionals with over 50 years of combined experience, having worked for well-known stations including Hallam FM, Rother FM, Dearne FM, and Kerrang Radio.
Listeners can expect a vibrant mix of music from the 1970s through to today’s chart hits, alongside relevant local news, interviews, and features that reflect the real voices of Barnsley.
Community-Powered and Business-Supported
The station will also be seeking support from local businesses and organisations to help fund its work through sponsorship opportunities. This support will directly contribute to training programmes, outreach work, and the ongoing development of the station’s community-led programming.
