We’re  excited to expand our support for artists and the development of new work with the launch of Civic Residencies, a new opportunity beginning in summer 2026 that will offer free week-long residencies with accommodation included.

For the first time, Barnsley Civic will offer artists a dedicated space and free accommodation for up to four people, enabling creatives to live and make work in Barnsley at no cost

Barnsley Civic is inviting applications from theatre makers across the UK who are interested in developing innovative, high-quality new work, creating accessible and inclusive projects, and building meaningful connections with creatives and communities in Barnsley and South Yorkshire.

The new residencies build on Barnsley Civic’s long-standing commitment to supporting artists, developing new work and creating meaningful connections between creativity and community. As an independent arts centre, Barnsley Civic has a strong history of championing both emerging artists and established companies across multiple disciplines, helping to nurture ambitious ideas and build lasting creative relationships.

The residency programme is designed to give theatre makers time, space, and practical support to develop bold new projects, while also offering opportunities to connect with local artists, communities and the wider cultural life of Barnsley.

Joel Brogan, Head of Programme at Barnsley Civic, said:

“Being able to offer this opportunity to Artists across the UK to develop work in Barnsley is incredibly exciting, and vital to support small/mid-scale theatre makers. We can’t wait to welcome you to South Yorkshire”

The first residency weeks now open for applications are:

· 29 June – 3 July 2026

· 14 – 18 September 2026

· 12 – 16 October 2026

Applications will be reviewed monthly, with further residency dates to be released throughout the year.

Artists taking part in the residencies will have access to Barnsley Civic’s Studio Theatre during the residency week, along with on-site facilities and support from the wider team. Barnsley Civic can also help artists make connections with local communities where this is relevant to their project or funding plans.

The programme also forms part of Barnsley Civic’s wider ambition to strengthen its relationships with artists across the country and to raise Barnsley’s profile as a place where new creative work can be developed.

Barnsley Civic is also able to offer studio residencies throughout the year without accommodation. Full details of Civic Residencies, including application information, are available here
