We’re proud to announce the launch of Civic Family, a new Associate Artists Programme that places artists at the heart our creative mission.
Officially launched at a celebratory event on 23 January, Civic Family formalises our long-standing creative relationships and commitment to nurturing creative talent through sustained practical support and shared ambition.
As a non-profit arts centre, Barnsley Civic has a rich history of championing both emerging artists and established companies. Working closely with creatives across multiple disciplines, Barnsley Civic has built enduring partnerships that support the creation of bold, innovative work. These relationships, alongside deep connections with local communities, are central to everything Barnsley Civic does.
As we approach the 150th anniversary of our iconic building, Civic Family marks a renewed commitment to providing artists with the time, space, visibility and resources they need to thrive, while recognising the powerful role arts and culture play in championing social change.
The inaugural Civic Family cohort reflects the breadth and ambition of our artistic programme. It includes award-winning dance theatre company Gary Clarke Company; visual artists Ailish Treanor and Lucy Dewsnap (BearSuit); theatre-maker and performer Natalie Bellingham; dance artist and producer Tala Lee-Turton / Red Robin Productions; inclusive musical theatre company Cross the Sky Theatre Company; and globally touring street theatre specialists Markmark Productions.
Joel Brogan, Barnsley Civic Head of Programme:
“We are so excited to be launching Civic Family, and for us to shout about all the ways in which we can support artists! As Barnsley’s Arts Centre its important that we champion the fantastic work Barnsley based creatives are making and support them through their career”
Gary Clarke, Artistic Director Gary Clarke Company:
“It’s really brilliant that schemes and partnerships like this exist, especially in a sector that is getting more and more difficult to gain support. This sense of togetherness and community is really vital, particularly in Barnsley. Today is just the beginning of what I am hoping to be a really fruitful and positive relationship, not just with myself and the Civic, but also as a collective of artists.”
Through the Civic Family programme, Barnsley Civic commits to:
- Supporting the professional development of artists and the creation of new work
- Championing and promoting work locally and nationally
- Providing platforms for performance, exhibition and engagement
- Offering rehearsal, co-working and networking support
- Encouraging collaboration and partnership working across the sector
We look forward to strengthening and expanding our partnerships through this exciting new programme and to growing the Civic Family in the years ahead. Full details of Civic Family
