Barnsley’s Young Photographers Are In The Frame

Barnsley Civic is thrilled to announce the recipients of IN FRAME: The Barnsley Young Photographers Award 2024.

This year, Barnsley Civic has partnered with Photoworks, the UK’s only organisation with a national remit for photography in England. Photoworks serves as an international platform with a global reach, providing opportunities for artists and audiences since 1995.

The Barnsley Young Photographers Award features three categories this year: EMERGING PROFESSIONAL (open to ages 18–30), STUDENT (open to those in Higher or Further Education, ages 16–30), and SCHOOL (open to young people aged 11–16 in secondary school, alternative provision, or home-schooled).

A panel of six judges evaluated all entries, selecting one prize-winning First Place in each category and recognising the talent of a second Commended placement. The winners are as follows:

Prizes include an hour-long mentoring session with Photoworks experts. Additionally, the winners of the Emerging Professional and Student categories will have their work showcased online by both Photoworks and Barnsley Civic. All first-place recipients will also receive a photography book bundle.

Jason White, Creative Engagement Manager at Barnsley Civic, commented: “We were overwhelmed by the quality of submissions this year. Some artists returned after submitting for the first-time last year, and a notable difference this year was the increased number of submissions from those aged 13–18. Barnsley Civic’s gallery has a reputation for hosting high-quality photography exhibitions, so it is heartwarming to see so many young people interested in pursuing photography in both commercial and artistic contexts.”

He continued: “We’re grateful for Photoworks’ support on this project and their commitment to developing opportunities for young and emerging photographers in Barnsley.”

All awarded photographers will be featured in an online showcase later this month.
