It’s an exhibition of the best of Barnsley Civic’s resident and guest companies with a mix of live music, theatre and dance. Including the award-winning Cross the Sky theatre company, Denada Dance Theatre and Civic Pride Singers and more.

Mariposa is a queer tragedy inspired by Puccini’s opera, Madame Butterfly. Set in Cuba, in dockland world of faded showgirls, hopeful rent boys and troubled sailors, this operatic dance drama explores the sacrifices we are ready to make in exchange of love and acceptance.
In the act one love duet, Mariposa, a Cuban rent boy, encounters an American sailor on the docks of Havana. This ten-minute duet happens over three nights and portrays how love grows between the two men.
DeNada Dance Theatre is currently restaging Mariposa at Barnsley Civic, ahead of its autumn 2024 and spring 2025 international tour.
Eletto are an indie folk duo from Barnsley.
With a shared love of folk and country genres, the duo formed in 2020 around best friends Mila and Zoe who first learnt to harmonise together in their local youth choir. Eletto blend rich vocal harmonies and melancholy lyrics into their nostalgia fuelled songs. An individual sound that calls to mind the likes of The Staves and First Aid Kit.
They released their debut single ‘Northern Sun’ in 2023 and have recently released their debut EP.

Katrina Kia Charles is a lyrically driven songwriter, gardener in the war, exploring life and meandering through genre, living in Barnsley and looking at the world mostly through a kaleidoscope.
She will take to our stage with a selection of acoustic numbers performed live.
Civic Pride Singers a singing and social group for Barnsley residents identifying as LGBTQIA+. The group hold sessions every two weeks at Barnsley Civic.
They’ll present a selection of uplifting songs of pride and celebration.
Cross The Sky is a community theatre company for learning disabled and autistic adults.
They have been a resident theatre company of Barnsley Civic since 2015 and have won numerous awards for a documentary which followed their experience of the covid pandemic and the impact it had on the planned tour of their production “Up in the Attic”.
