At Barnsley Civic, we’re committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone, no matter their background or ability, has equal access to our building and programme. For us, accessibility isn’t just about lifts and signage—it’s about creating an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome, represented, and able to engage fully with what we do.

We follow the Social Model of Disability, aiming to provide more than just physical access. Our team is dedicated to serving the people of Barnsley, ensuring every visitor and collaborator has equal access and opportunity.

To keep pushing this vision forward, we have an internal access group that challenges us to be more inclusive. Our goal is to become a regional centre of excellence, creating work for disabled audiences and reaching communities across the UK.

Our Commitments to Accessibility

We’ve made the following commitments to ensure everyone has access to our spaces and events:

  • Full wheelchair and mobility access throughout the building.
  • A hearing loop installed in our Theatre.
  • Clear signage throughout the building and visual journey guides available online.
  • We highlight and champion Relaxed, Captioned, and Audio-described (BSL) performances within our programme, recognising the different needs they cater to.
  • Whenever possible, we offer touch tours to enhance the experience for visually impaired audiences.
  • We programme at least two shows per year specifically for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD).
  • We provide free shows and activities throughout our programme.
  • Our Gallery and exhibitions are free to enter.
  • We offer £13.50/£7 tickets for many of our shows to keep culture affordable.
  • Wheelchair users and visually impaired people are entitled to a free ticket for a personal assistant/essential companion
  • Guide dogs and service animals are welcome throughout the building.

We’re here to make your visit as easy as possible. If you have any specific access needs, just let us know when booking.

Relaxed Performances

Our Relaxed Performances offer a laid-back theatre experience for those who benefit from a more informal setting, including individuals with learning disabilities, autism, or sensory sensitivities.

We have accessible toilets, lift access to all areas, and front-row wheelchair spaces in the Theatre. Guide dogs are welcome. Just let us know your access needs when you book.

You can learn more about Relaxed Performances in this great article on the Official London Theatre website here.

Bringing Babies

We welcome babes in arms at most of our shows and strive to be as inclusive as possible. We know that deciding which shows are right for babies is up to you, but if you need help choosing, feel free to reach out to us on social media or through our Box Office team.

For performances designed specifically for babies and their carers, tickets will be required, and we’ll make that clear when you book.

We'd love to keep in touch!
