The Community Space
Our collection of zines is a free to use, community resource and is made up of donations to Barnsley Civic.
A ‘zine’, or hand-made magazine, can be collaged, Xeroxed, photocopied, or produced digitally and printed in small quantities. Although methods of production have changed slightly over the decades, it still remains DIY and a true alternative to mainstream media.
Zines are predominately sold online, or distributed via zine fairs and through national and international distribution networks, or even circulated by hand.
By-passing mainstream press and social media trends ensures that zines remain a true platform for communities and like-minded people who share ideas and interests.
Since the 1930s, the international DIY zine scene has been a place for people who identify with specific sub-cultures, musical tribes, political parties, sporting teams and marginalised groups to share their ideas and experiences, through writing, poetry and art. Zines were essentially a form of blogging, predating social media and the internet.
